Hyderabad: The cardiothoracic (CT) and anaesthesia teams of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) have successfully performed heart valve replacement surgery on a 23-year-old patient.
Upender, a resident of Choutuppal, Yadadri district, who was admitted to OGH on November 11, was suffering from chronic Rheumatoid Heart Disease (RHD), a medical condition in which the heart valves get irreparably damaged due to rheumatoid fever. Apart from chronic heart disease, he also had other health complications including tuberculosis and mitral regurgitation.
According to the doctors, mitral regurgitation is a critical medical condition in which the mitral valve of the heart does not close tightly, which allows blood to flow backward into the heart. As a result, the blood doesn’t move from the heart to the rest of the body efficiently, which creates a lot of health complications.
After a series of tests, the CT surgeons at OGH decided to take up mitral valve replacement surgery, which was conducted on December 15. After the surgery, Upender has made proper recovery and was discharged on Tuesday.
“The patient has recovered well from the surgery. I must congratulate the teams from cardiothoracic, anaesthesia departments and other support staff who were part of the surgery. Such high-end surgeries are very expensive in private hospitals and we are glad that our teams have been able to conduct them free of cost,” OGH Superintendent, Dr B Nagender on Tuesday said.
