Hyderabad: Surgeons at KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, have successfully performed a life-saving windpipe reconstruction on a young man from Hyderabad suffering from severe respiratory distress.
The patient’s condition was the result of accidentally consuming phenyl two years ago; the chemical damage and subsequent treatments led to a progressive narrowing of his airway, a press release said.
Dr Rohan Reddy C, senior onco-thoracic surgeon, said the patient’s windpipe had been constricted from a normal 2 cm diameter to a mere 8mm. “A 3.5cm segment was severely narrowed, making even simple breathing a struggle. Any phlegm buildup caused life-threatening gasping,” he said.
The surgical team, including Dr Vijay and Dr Rama Phanindra, removed the entire damaged segment and utilised advanced techniques to bridge the gap using healthy tissue. The patient has been discharged and is now breathing normally, the doctors added.
