Hyderabad: Despite appeals by the police and massive campaigns across various platforms on the need for road safety precautions of wearing helmets and seat belts, several motorists refuse to make them an integral part of driving.

As part of a drive, the Rachakonda traffic police booked 26,035 persons driving without helmet in last one week while another 171 were fined for not wearing seat belt.

The traffic police also booked cases against persons for over speeding, signal jumping, driving without licenses and other traffic violations.

“A total of 44,024 cases were booked by the traffic police for Motor Vehicle Act violations and a fine of Rs 1.38 crore was collected during the last one week. Also, traffic rules awareness programmes are being conducted to reduce the violations,” said D Srinivas, DCP Traffic Rachakonda.

The traffic police also caught 89 persons during drunken drive checks held at Malkajgiri, Uppal, Vanasthalipuram, Kushaiguda, Yadadri, Choutuppal and Bhongir police stations limits during the last one week.

During the same period, eight deaths in 54 road accidents were reported due to various reasons in Rachakonda and 50 people were injured. “As per the road accident data analysis data, it is found the accidents occurred due to human errors and road engineering defects,” the official pointed out.

The police maintained that analyses of the road accidents pointed out to negligence of drivers, over speeding, driving under influence of alcohol, and self skidding.

The traffic engineering cell visited 11 fatal accident spots along with officials of traffic police, law and order police and other departments concerned. “On their advice, rectification works of various black spots are taken up,” the official added.
