Hyderabad: Two handloom workers from Uttar Pradesh who opened up to 40 accounts in different banks and worked as money mules for some fraudsters from Nigeria were arrested by the Hyderabad police on Saturday. The police seized mobile phones and ATM/ Debit cards from them.

The arrested persons are identified as Mohd Nayeem (23) and Mohd Farooq (22), both natives of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Nayeem and Farooq, using forged documents, opened around 40 bank accounts in various banks in Uttar Pradesh. After opening the bank accounts, the details were provided to the foreign nationals particularly some Nigerian nationals who indulged in various cybercrimes.

“Whenever, any amount is transferred into the bank accounts, the fraudsters will inform Nayeem or Farooq, who would then withdraw the amount through the ATM center. After deducting their commission of 10 per cent, the suspects would hand over the remaining amount to the fraudsters,” said Joint Commissioner of Police, Detective Department Dr Gajarao Bhupal.

The two persons were tracked down by the police during an investigation into a ‘Gift fraud’ case wherein a victim from the city was duped of Rs 9.19 lakh. The victim got in touch with one person who introduced himself as a US national and duped on the pretext of sending a gift parcel containing expensive items.
