Hyderabad: In order to promote UK tourism and hospitality for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, a team of VisitBritain hosted an event with all tourism industry stakeholders here on Friday. The event was aimed at placing Birmingham, the West Midlands and Britain on the world stage. Representatives from around 40 tourism agencies and associations attended the meet.

Speaking at the event, British Deputy High Commissioner to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Andrew Fleming said “I am delighted that the UK is enthusiastically open for visitors with much simplified travel rules and a wealth of exciting opportunities. For sports fans, the West Midlands is a must visit destination with the rescheduled 5th Test at Edgbaston on July 7 and the Commonwealth Games commencing on July 28 where a multitude of local stars like PV Sindhu will be going for gold”.

Being held from July 28 to August 8, the Games will be the biggest sporting and cultural event ever held in Birmingham, with thousands of world class athletes, more than one million spectators, and an estimated global audience of 1.5 billion.

Alongside the sporting programme is a six-month cultural festival, the Birmingham 2022 Festival, underway from March, to celebrate creativity across the West Midlands. The Queen’s Baton Relay has also been travelling around the Commonwealth, with a recent historic stop in Dubai, UAE, as part of UK National Day at Dubai Expo, and the UK before arriving in Birmingham for the opening ceremony on July 28.
