Hyderabad Water Board warns of heavy penalties for STP violations
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board imposed a Rs.1 lakh fine on a commercial establishment in Jubilee Hills for discharging treated water onto a public road and warned all establishments against violating wastewater disposal norms.
Hyderabad: In a firm warning on Monday, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) announced that heavy penalties would be imposed on violators who discharge treated water from private STPs onto public roads.
On Friday, June 26, officials conducting an inspection discovered that a commercial establishment on Road No. 82, Jubilee Hills, was discharging treated water from its Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) onto a public road, creating unhygienic conditions due to water stagnation. The incident caused significant inconvenience and created a public nuisance for commuters and pedestrians.
The Water Board served a notice on the management, seeking an explanation within 48 hours and directing it to stop the discharge immediately.
Consequently, the Water Board imposed a fine of Rs.1 lakh on the establishment for causing public inconvenience. It warned that failure to pay the fine within three days would result in additional penalties, the disconnection of drinking water and sewerage services and further legal action.
In a press statement, the Water Board directed all residential, commercial, educational and industrial establishments operating STPs to reuse treated wastewater strictly in accordance with regulations. It warned that discharging treated water onto public roads or other unauthorised areas would invite severe punitive action.
