Hyderabad: A woman from the city alleged that she was deceived into marrying an Oman national, who turned out to be a person with mental health issues, and she was being harassed by her in-laws back in Oman, Muscat.
According to a petition filed by her family with the Ministry of External Affairs seeking her rescue, Farheen Begum (26), a resident of Gazi Banda in the old city was married to Saleem Nasser Al Salim in November last year in Hyderabad.
“The match was facilitated by two agents from Hyderabad and one agent based in Oman and ‘Nikah’ performed in the bride’s house. Three members from the bridegroom’s side were also present. They had kept Rs 1 lakh in front of Begum’s parents, which was immediately taken back after a video was taken,” said Fatima Begum, Farheen’s mother.
At the time of marriage, Saleem Naseer Al Salim’s family claimed they owned two houses apart from him having a government job.
However, soon after landing at her in-law’s house last December, Farheen realised that her husband’s behaviour was abnormal. He had mental health issues and was not employed.
In a video appeal, Farheen said her husband’s family got her married only with an intention of making her take care of him and alleged she was being tortured by her in-laws. The Indian Embassy in Oman, Muscat is looking into the complaint.
