Hyderabad: If not for Ram Ki Bandi’s dosa, Hyderabadis wake up before sunrise only for Niloufer café’s age-old and forever favourite breakfast, malai bun.
Served only till about 6 am in the morning, in the Lakdikapul lane, the malai bun – as the name itself suggests, is a lip-smacking combination of malai (cream) and some freshly baked bun.
The malai is a slightly flavoured version of the thick layer that forms on milk when heated. The cream is usually dressed with a teaspoon of sugar – and is perfectly sweet and salty at the same time, while making many feel like just licking the rest of it. And the combination of malai with the bun is something that can transport people into another world.
As one visits the venue, one can see that the visitors of the place swarm like bees around the malai container and get excited with every serving of the creamy savoury.
“Although we have had the combination quite a few times, the excitement for the morning breakfast is always on a high. It is stomach-filling and one can feel content to have something so good at just Rs 60,” shares Mohd. Iqbal, a resident of Masab Tank.
Once a prominent breakfast of the Deccan people, malai bun had lost its charm over the years with the emergence of diverse breakfast options. However, cafés like Niloufer, Nimrah (Charminar) and Chattu Ram Yadav Milk Shop (Chudi Bazar) have tried to keep the savoury alive in the memory of the city dwellers.
