Hyderabad: In a city with historic roads, crowded markets and ever-expanding colonies, one small street has managed to pull off something extraordinary. It exists on Google Maps, but not on the ground.
Interestingly, on the maps, this street near Begumpet in Hyderabad is named after James Bond, the British Secret Service (MI6) agent created by Ian Fleming. But no one living there seems to be aware of their street being named after the most popular spy character code-named 007.
Located in the B.S. Maktha area close to Somajiguda, James Bond Street, the city’s most mysterious address, is an unassuming residential-cum-commercial street. When someone searches for it online or enters the location on Google Maps, the street name appears. However, when you visit the location, it is surprising to find no signboards, no painted markings or official display of the name anywhere on the ground.
In fact, what is more surprising is that the local residents also claim that the name is completely unfamiliar to them. “We are the third generation living here, but we have never heard of this name. Not from our parents or grandparents,” said Laxmi, who runs a provision store in the lane.
Rajni, a trader who has spent nearly five decades in the area, echoed the disbelief. “If this is James Bond Street, it is a secret even we don’t know,” he said with a laugh.
What makes the case even more mysterious is the apparent lack of official recognition. The name is not visibly recorded in civic listings, and even references linked to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) do not acknowledge such a street.
The street seems to be living a double life, famous digitally but anonymous physically.
Situated close to the busy Greenlands Bus Stop, the area is well known to commuters, delivery agents and auto drivers. But ask anyone for ‘James Bond Street’, and you are more likely to get a puzzled look than directions.
Some believe it could be a playful addition by online map contributors. Others suspect a forgotten nickname that somehow got digitised and stuck.
However, this ‘James Bond Street’ is unique as it is a place where the location map indicates you have arrived, but reality confuses and refuses to confirm the same.
