Hyderabad: The city’s popular biryani joints Hotel Bawarchi and New Astoria at RTC Crossroads have been fined Rs.25,000 each for unhealthy and illegal practices. While Bawarchi was penalised for using unstamped meat, New Astoria came in the firing line for not maintaining hygiene in its kitchen.

The action on Thursday came after Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation medical officers along with Food Inspectors inspected Hotel Café Bahar, Hotel Bawarchi and New Astoria . The inspections were in the wake of a rising number of complaints on unhygienic conditions and unstamped meat being used for cooking dishes, an official said.

A compounding fee of Rs.25000 was levied on Hotel Bawarchi for using unstamped meat for cooking purposes and a compounding fee of Rs.25,000 was imposed on Hotel New Astoria for maintaining unhygienic conditions in the kitchen, the official said.

“During our inspection, we noticed that the managements were procuring limited quantity of stamped meat and using more quantity of unstamped meat. There was lot of variation in the bills produced and the meat available on the premises,” the official said, adding that it was mandatory for hotels, restaurants, function halls and other establishments to procure only stamped meat from GHMC slaughter houses.

The municipal corporation also appealed citizens to insist and purchase only stamped meat at retail outlets in the colonies and other places. Consumption of unstamped meat could result in ill health as unauthorized slaughtering is done mostly of deceased or unhealthy goats or sheep, GHMC officials said.
