Hyderabad: Hyderabad’s Samiya Imad Farooqui scaled a new high in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) junior rankings when she reached World No.2 in the world in girls under-19 juniors.
The 17-year-old, an Under-15 Asian Badminton Championship winner, has been one of the consistent performers at the junior circuit. She last won her title in Bulgaria junior international and after that started playing only seniors. She is ranked 178 in seniors.
Being trained under Pullela Gopichand, Samiya hopes to get top 50 in the seniors. She will be mostly playing senior tournaments from now on, apart from the junior world championships even though she can play in under-19 for one more year.
In 2019 she ended as the No 1 ranked player under-19 girls in India as per BAI rankings.
Earlier BWF had frozen the world junior rankings as of March 17, 2020, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, with the recommencement of some international junior tournaments, BWF stated that they have decided to add subsequent International junior tournament results to the world junior rankings without deducting points from previous weeks thereby creating a rolling ranking until such time as the world junior rankings can be fully unfrozen.
