Hyderabad: Like every other neighbourhood kid, he likes to play tennis, cricket, football and even piano! However, there is something else which puts him in a different league from others. And, 13-year-old Darsh Malani very well knows how to spell Abracadabra!
Recently selected for the prestigious ‘Global Child Prodigy Awards 2022’ to be award in Dubai in February, 2022, Hyderabad’s self-taught little magician has come a long way since he started doing science experiments at home. His experiments graduated into magic tricks enough to enthral audiences and bring him laurels such as Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar Award.
“My biggest compliment was when Prime Minister Narendra Modi told me that the award is just a beginning and I have to achieve great heights. He also gifted me books,” says Darsh with a glee in his eyes. This year, he was also felicitated by the Dubai Royal family at the Global Excellence and Inspiring Leaders Award at the India-UAE Business Conclave 2021.
His mother Anjali Malani says Darsh learned magic tricks at home through internet. “A few years ago, I circulated his videos among my friends and that’s how he got his first magic show at an NGO in Hyderabad and the second one happened in Dubai.” To date, he had performed more than 250 shows in India and abroad including UAE, United Kingdom, Russia and Germany. He also performed at the recently concluded The Dubai Expo – India Pavilion. His name is registered in Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records.
Darsh’s favourite magic tricks are ‘levitations’ done by Steven Frayne (better known by his stage name Dynamo). He is also a big fan of reel-world’s biggest wizard Harry Potter, and he had even visited the studio where the movie was made. Well, Darsh plans to use Potter’s flying stick.
Talking about his own tricks, he says, he can change Rs 100 note into a hundred dollar and can pull a chosen card from a deck of playing cards from an unpeeled orange.
For Darsh , who is Class VIII student and Head Boy of the Delhi Public School, Mahendra Hills, studies are his priority, but he has no plans to leave his title of ‘Master Magician’ at anytime soon. “I get very nervous before my shows, but as soon as I am on the stage, I don’t know where all that nervousness vanishes.”
His parents — Aditya Malani and Anjali — have been his strong supporters, but they are also cautious that even after garnering all the fame, he remains grounded. To this, Darsh says, he is a regular guy to his friends, however, he indeed escapes scolding from his teachers for his little naughtiness.
