Hyderabad: Interdepartmental referrals, utilising latest technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning besides reaching the unreached through innovative outreach approaches were key to early diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) as highlighted in the virtual conclave organised by Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana in collaboration with National Program for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI)- Government of Telangana, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital) and Novartis.
The conclave was envisaged to increase the awareness on diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, and existing services available in government and private sectors, current mechanisms for early diagnosis of DR towards preventing permanent blindness due to DR etc., and was addressed by various eminent speakers in the field.
As per the National Blindness and Visually Impaired Survey 2019, most cases of blindness (92.9%) and visual impairment (96.2%) in India were due to avoidable or preventable causes. Warangal district had second highest prevalence of blindness (3.47%) and visual impairment (66.2%) in India after Bijnor district of UP, as per the National Blindness Survey conducted in 2016 across 31 districts in India.
A survey by Telangana NPCB programme observed Diabetic Retinopathy as a reason for blindness in 0.5% of population. Hyderabad ranks sixth in the prevalence of diabetes and surveys found that 22 per cent of the patients in both Telangana and AP suffer from diabetes, a press release said.
