INCOIS issues no tsunami threat warning after Taiwan earthquake

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), which houses the Tsunami Warning Centre, on Wednesday issued a ‘No Tsunami Threat’ to India and other countries near Indian ocean following an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 (M6.7) that was detected at around 11.11 pm on March 22, 2022 in Taiwan.
“Based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, Tsunami Threat does not exist for India. INCOIS will monitor sea level changes near the epicentral region and report in case of tsunami threat,” INCOIS in its special bulletin said.
The Tsunami warning centre in the bulletin clarified that only national/ state or local authorities and disaster management officers have the authority to make decision regarding the official threat and warning status in their coastal areas and any action to be taken in response.
