Hyderabad: Digital technologies are playing a key role today and the pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation further, which is good for physicians and their patients. So driven by advancements in computation power we are seeing communications network, sensors, robotics, virtual reality, and AI exponentially improving. And India has the capabilities to drive transformation in healthcare.
Geoff Martha, chairman & CEO, Medtronics in his plenary address as part of BioAsia, said, “A greater example of how we are leveraging data in AI at Medtronic to deliver insight during care comes from Apollo Group of Hospitals in India. Medtronic has partnered with Apollo to integrate AI with advanced stroke management. With AI technology in place, diagnosis takes less than two minutes as compared to the standard hour. This reduces the overall time from diagnosis to treatment and with stroke patients every second counts.”
Robotic assisted surgery further brings the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients around the world. “Just a few months ago we were proud to complete our first patient case with a Hugo Robotic Assisted Surgery System at Apollo Hospitals in India. We also opened a new Surgical Robotic Experience Centre in India. The centre is one of ten world class facilities around the globe where clinicians can experience and train on the Hugo system,” he said.
“I believe Asia and particularly India has the potential to be a driving force in the global healthcare transformation that we envision. India has the right mix of IT and R&D expertise; and an innovation mindset that strives to deliver solutions and deploy new technologies. It’s essential India uses its strength to contribute to the digital transformation in healthcare, particularly in software development, testing, quality and compliance and data analytics,” he added
Medtronic saw this potential early on and in 2020 it announced the expansion of its R&D centre in Hyderabad – the Medtronic Engineering and Innovation Center or MEIC. MEIC is now the largest R&D centre outside the US and has contributed significantly to the areas of software, engineering solutions like MyCareLink mobile app for remote patient monitoring. The app automatically sends heart device information to a clinic and provides physicians timely alerts in case of an emergency.
