Hangzhou (China): The Indian women’s hockey team faltered at the final hurdle, losing 1-4 to hosts China in the Asia Cup 2025 final on Sunday, thereby missing a direct qualification for the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands.
India made a dream start when Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner within the first minute of the match. But China bounced back in dominant fashion, scoring through Zixia Ou (21st minute), Hong Li (41st), Meirong Zou (51st) and Jiaqi Zhong (53rd) to clinch their third Asia Cup title.
Despite taking the early lead, India struggled to maintain momentum. China earned multiple penalty corners and dominated possession, but India’s defence initially held strong. The equaliser came in the second quarter via Zixia’s penalty corner conversion, and from there, China never looked back.
After a 1-1 deadlock at half-time, China took control. Hong Li’s field goal from a swift counterattack gave the hosts the lead in the third quarter. With India pressing hard for an equaliser in the final phase, China struck twice in quick succession—first through Zou, then Zhong—to put the game beyond reach.
India’s forwards, including Mumtaz Khan, Lalremsiami, and Sunelita Toppo, had quiet games, failing to replicate their earlier tournament form.
This victory secured China’s place in the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup, having previously won the Asia Cup in 1989 (Hong Kong) and 2009 (Bangkok). India, meanwhile, must now go through the World Cup Qualifiers for a shot at the global tournament.
