Indian in Malta says earning Rs 70,000–1 lakh in India may not warrant moving abroad
An Indian man living in Malta has sparked an online discussion after suggesting that those earning Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh a month in India should reconsider moving abroad. He cited living costs, savings, loneliness and family sacrifices.
Hyderabad: For many Indians, moving abroad is often viewed as a route to higher salaries and a better standard of living. However, an Indian man living in Malta has offered a different perspective, arguing that earning more overseas does not necessarily translate into greater savings or a happier life.

Manish Yadav, who shares content on Instagram, recently posted a video discussing whether Indians should consider moving abroad for work. He suggested that those already earning between Rs 70,000 and Rs 1 lakh a month in India should carefully weigh the decision before relocating.
“In my opinion if you are earning 1 lakh rupees, not just 1 lakh, even if you are earning 70,000 to 80,000, there is absolutely no need to move abroad, brother,” he said.
Yadav pointed out that comparing salaries without considering living expenses can give a misleading picture. Rent, food and other daily costs can take up a significant share of an overseas income. He claimed that someone earning around Rs 1.5 lakh could potentially be left with savings of just Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 after expenses.
Beyond money, he highlighted the personal side of living away from home. Missing time with parents, relatives and children, particularly during important family occasions, can be difficult. He also spoke about loneliness and the challenge of rebuilding social connections in a new country.
Yadav said moving abroad could make more financial sense when the salary is considerably higher.
“To make it worthwhile coming here, you should earn at least 2 lakh, 2.5 lakh, or 3 lakh. And not every job pays that kind of salary, brother. Rest is entirely up to you,” he added.
His comments sparked discussion online, with several users agreeing that salary should not be the only factor behind such a major decision.
“Earning one lakh in India is actually pretty decent,” wrote one user.
