Hyderabad: Suzi, the popular chimpanzee at the Nehru Zoological Park, here died from what is suspected to be a massive heart stroke on Thursday morning. She was 34.

According to the Zoo authorities, the chimpanzee was found lying on the floor and preliminary investigation revealed the animal had died between 7 am and 8 am. An autopsy by the veterinary expert team from zoo, VBRI and LaCONES was carried out, revealing that all the organs were normal except for heart and lungs where in symptoms indicated a massive heart stroke.

The chimpanzee was born on July 15, 1986, and was a major attraction for the visitors to the zoo. Officials said it was normal in intake of fruits, sprouts, juices and coconut water, till Wednesday. Suzi was the only chimpanzee in the Hyderabad zoo. With the demise of Suzi, only three to four zoos in the country are left with chimpanzees, officials said.

Suzi was once the pet of Subrata Roy of the Sahara Group. Her birthdays were a major celebration in the zoo, with school children and the entire zoo staff turning up as she would cut a cake. This year however, on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no guests or visitors to cheer on and the Zoo Park’s officials and staff, including the animal keepers and veterinary team, got together and offered Suzi her favourite fruit cake and bread.
