Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park has added two brightly coloured mandrills to its collection under an animal exchange programme. The primates will be open for public viewing in early March after completing quarantine

The Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad witnessed a surge in visitors on Christmas Day, with 23,440 people thronging the zoo. The addition of new animals such as zebras, meerkats, serval cats, barasingha, and white swans has boosted public interest.

For the first time, a wolf under the zoo's care is expected to give birth, with authorities anticipating the arrival of three to four whelps within the next one to two weeks. The zoo currently houses three grey wolves—two males and one female. "We are thrilled to welcome wolf pups. This is the first time it will happen under the zoo's supervision," said a senior official.

With temperatures recording above the normal in March itself, large air coolers have already been installed in the lions, tigers and other carnivore enclosures. These enclosures have also been equipped with vetiver curtains and thunga grass, which are frequently watered to keep the temperature down

As temperatures continue to drop in the city, heaters have been placed in the night houses of carnivores, primates, and bears to protect them from the extreme cold, especially at night. To prevent foot cramps in carnivores, which are common during winter, the zoo authorities have also provided wooden planks in their night houses.

Zoo curator, J.Vasantha, deputy curator, Barnoba, and staff members participated in a plantation programme organized at the Black Buck enclosures.

This visit follows Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's directive to officials to establish a new zoo park on the city's outskirts, ideally in the fourth city. In response, forest officials have identified several revenue lands near Kurumidda, Kadthal, Tadiparthy, and other forest blocks in Rangareddy district.
