Hyderabad: Many-a-times our education although gives an overall picture of the workings of the concerned subject in real life, several graduates fail to adapt to the working atmosphere soon after college. And thus, educationalists have been majorly suggesting students to get a fair experience of any industry through internships which will indeed help in gaining an experience of the ground realities of an industry while also tuning their choices of workplace for job opportunities.
Likewise, good companies also consider internships to be an important factor for the companies to hire individuals. The importance of an internship has been shown in several recent surveys.
According to NACE’s Class of 2019 Student Survey, out of more than half of all graduating seniors who applied for a full-time job, 57.5 per cent of students who had an internship and 43.7 per cent of graduating seniors who did not have an internship received a job offer.
Basically, the company which is hiring you would like to know your practical abilities. If you’re looking to gain experience, working as an intern is arguably the most advantageous plan of action.
Internships offer new skills and opportunities that you might not receive otherwise. Interns not only gain work knowledge within the industry of their choice, but also skills like interacting with professionals, time management, teamwork, work-life balance, and problem-solving.
Not that these skills can’t be acquired in college, but real-time experience is a lot more different than what colleges offer. When an intern makes a mistake at their job, they’ll have an opportunity to learn and move ahead from it. You fail, you learn and you grow!
This understanding of their strengths and limitations will help individuals to decide how they want their career to be and explore other potential career paths within their preferred industry or out of it. The hands-on experience will make it easy for an individual to plan their careers.
Internships are also helpful to network with professionals in their industries. It is an excellent opportunity to make professional bonds and learn work from them. Further, these connections can also help individuals in getting recommendations for job opportunities.
How to prepare for Internships:
Many companies are now offering internships to first test the employees’ knowledge and groom them. These internships can be paid or unpaid depending upon the company. You will also get a certificate and letter of recommendation from the company at the time of leaving.
Many online platforms like LinkedIn, Internshala, Idealist, Glassdoor, LetsIntern, InternWorld, HelloIntern, InterMee, etc. display internship opportunities across different sectors. Anyone with a basic skill and knowledge about their industry of choice can apply to these internships. Companies hiring interns don’t expect much more than some basic knowledge, good work ethic, confidence and discipline.
So if you want to crack the internship interview, prepare yourself as you do for a job interview, be passionate to learn the work, and with all right qualities, you are good to go.
