Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Task Force along with the Tukaramgate police and Civil Supplies officials busted an inter-State Public Distribution System (PDS) rice selling racket and arrested 16 persons on Friday. They seized about 410 quintals of rice and six vehicles.
Police said the suspects procured the rice illegally from beneficiaries at low rates and diverted it to Gujarat to sell at higher rates. The arrested persons were N Manikyam, B Hassan, Devender, Pavan Kalyan, J Shankar, Mahesh Kumar, L Ramji, D Rajesh, D Lakshman, M Bhanu Naik, B Raju, Vijay Kumar, M Bharath, B Santosh Kumar, B Ramulu and T Praveen Kumar.
According to the police, Manikyam and Shankar, the main organizers, were maintaining illegal godowns at Bhanoor of Sangareddy. They engaged other suspects as agents, through whom they collected the PDS rice. They had agents in several places including Tukaramgate, Moulali, Parsigutta, Bommalaramaram and Bibinagar.
“They bought the rice at Rs 9 to Rs 10 per kg from beneficiaries and stored it at Pashamailaram and clandestinely transported it to Gujarat to sell to dealers at higher rates,” said an official. The investigation also revealed that the rice was also sold to rice mills and poultries locally.
