IPL 2026 playoff race heats up as eight teams remain in contention
The IPL 2026 playoff race has intensified with eight teams still in contention for the top four spots. Crucial matches involving Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings could determine the final playoff standings
Hyderabad: The high-profile 2026 season of the IPL is heading towards a thrilling business end, with eight teams still alive in the ‘Race to the Playoffs’.
While Gujarat Titans are in the midst of a sensational run, remaining unbeaten for the last three weeks, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have won two games on the bounce in Raipur, the likes of Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are all jostling for a spot in the top four.
With a few teams in the top half suddenly struggling to sustain momentum and those below them making a late bid for the top four, the final leg of the league stage promises several high-stakes contests that could decide the fate of the qualification race.
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans (May 16):
KKR had just one point in their kitty after the first six games before a resurgence powered by their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning duo of Rinku Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy. They have since rediscovered their mojo, with Finn Allen smashing a hundred, Sunil Narine and Chakaravarthy controlling the middle overs with the ball, and the batters doing enough to back up their bowlers. However, against GT, they could face their toughest test of the last two weeks. The 2022 champions, GT, are on a five-match winning streak and need just one more win to get a ‘Q’ against their name, while for KKR, it will be a must-win game.
Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 17):
A repeat of last year’s final, this fixture features two teams that at one stage looked set to run away with the competition but suddenly stumbled after a few losses. Given the current state of the table, this could be a massive game in the race to the playoffs in the TATA IPL 2026. RCB held a 3-1 edge over PBKS last year when the two sides faced off multiple times, including in the grand final. PBKS, after dominating the first half of the season and remaining unbeaten in their first seven games, have now lost four in a row. A win against the defending champions would not only catapult them back into top-two contention but also restore some confidence as they look to end the Dharamsala leg of the league stage on a high.
Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 18):
SRH, thanks to a spirited bowling effort, were able to restrict CSK in the previous meeting between the two sides. Now, they meet again with a playoff spot potentially on the line. SRH’s batters have looked vulnerable on sluggish tracks and pitches offering assistance to the bowlers, and CSK will hope for a similar surface against the heavy-duty batting unit of the Orange Army. That could allow them to unleash their spin duo of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein to full effect. CSK have won three games in a row and will need to keep the momentum going if they are to make a surprise late push into the top four.
Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings (May 21):
GT have looked nearly unbeatable at home. They seem to have found the perfect formula by preparing decent wickets with a bit of grass on them to aid their four-pronged pace attack, while relying on a stable top four that plays proper cricketing shots and consistently takes them to competitive totals. GT also showed at Chepauk that they can be a handful on slow pitches, and CSK will need to find a way to counter the challenge, especially at the top of the order against Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada in the Powerplay. Rabada’s sensational form has been central to GT’s dominance in the first six overs with the ball, and with this fixture coming towards the business end of the league stage, it could play a huge role in deciding the top four.
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 22):
RCB had blown away SRH in the TATA IPL 2026 opener, when the then Pat Cummins-less side looked a bit short on bowling resources. But the emergence of fearless prodigies Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, along with Eshan Malinga’s magnificent form, has added real bite to the 2016 champions’ bowling attack. Back in Hyderabad, on what is expected to be a good batting wicket, the hosts will fancy their chances of out-batting the opposition. But RCB will be anything but easy opponents, especially after ending the Raipur leg with two back-to-back wins.
Speaking on JioStar, Sanjay Bangar said: “PBKS-RCB could very well decide who gets the cushion of a top-two finish. It’s a repeat of last year’s final. PBKS have just lost a bit of momentum, while RCB have regained theirs at the right time.
“Punjab will be under pressure because recent history against RCB hasn’t exactly been in their favour, but it’s a new season and I hope that it doesn’t play on their minds. It’s a big game, and PBKS would want to leave the hills on a high because this fixture could be a real decider in determining who carries that confidence into the next round,” he said.
Aakash Chopra said: “It’s CSK’s final home game of the season and, given how congested the table is, it will be a must-win for both, especially the home team. They have had to manage a lot of injuries, but still, players like Anshul Kamboj, Urvil Patel, and the two spinners have stood up for them and they will be key again if they have to stop SRH’s big-hitters. SRH would be ruing their last defeat and, given they still have a chance to finish on 18 points, they wouldn’t want to leave it until the last game.
“In my opinion, this could be a virtual knockout game for both. Whoever wins this one will come significantly closer to qualifying. With the stakes this high and Chepauk expected to be buzzing, fans should be in for a treat,” he said.
Irfan Pathan said: “The final game in Hyderabad has all the ingredients of a virtual knockout match. This is an evening game, and the surface is expected to be a flat one.
“It could come down to who hits more sixes and scores more runs, but on a batting-friendly wicket, I’ll be looking closely at that one game-changing spell with the ball. RCB’s bowling attack, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood setting the tone upfront, has been executing its plans exceptionally well.
“Given how crucial the Powerplay has been in the tournament, with both bat and ball, how Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head fare against those two could be decisive,” he said.
