Kochi: Transgender makeup artist and former reality show contestant Jaanmoni Das has publicly apologised for her recent objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his parentage, saying she had no intention of deliberately hurting anyone.

In a video shared on Instagram, Das said she wanted to publicly apologise if her remarks had hurt anyone and admitted that she should have verified the facts before making the statement.

The celebrity make-up artist’s inappropriate remarks against PM Modi while speaking to a section of media on the students’ protest in New Delhi had triggered widespread outcry on social media platforms.

“My video has created a huge controversy. I honestly did not realise it would become such an issue. I reacted after watching a content related to the Delhi protest and answered a question posed by the media. Perhaps I could not express myself properly in Malayalam,” she said in her new video posted on Instagram.

Das said she realised the seriousness of the issue only after receiving numerous threatening phone calls and messages from morning onwards.

“I did not understand what had happened initially. Later, some of my friends called and told me it had become a major issue. I immediately requested everyone who had uploaded my video to delete it,” she said.

She claimed to have received threatening calls from Kerala, other parts of India and abroad, including Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, following the controversy.

Das clarified that she had not intended to make any remarks about the PM’s mother and that her comments were related only to a content she had seen.

“I only raised a question based on the content I had watched. It was not directed against Modiji,” she said.

Noting that many people were angry with her after the video went viral, Das said she had never intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

“If I have made a mistake, I sincerely apologise. I wanted to apologise publicly. Please forgive me, considering me as a child. I have nothing more to say,” she said.

Das also said that after searching on Google, she realised that what she had said was factually incorrect.

“I should have checked the facts before making such a statement. I was deeply upset and therefore decided to post this video, though belatedly,” she said.

Das also urged people not to take the issue seriously.
