Jagtial: Residents of Atmakur in Metpalli mandal staged a protest at the RDO office on Friday, demanding that the State government cancel the Peddavagu sand quarry. They later submitted a representation to RDO Srinivas.
Speaking on the occasion, the villagers said Peddavagu was their only source of drinking and irrigation water. Drinking water is supplied to the village from a well located in the middle of the rivulet.
They noted that Peddavagu receives water only when the Rollavagu project, located upstream, overflows. Otherwise, the water body remains dry.
However, the government had opened a sand quarry in Peddavagu to source sand for the construction of Indiramma houses and the Kalikota Suramma project.
Due to rampant sand mining, the groundwater table in the village has depleted, leading to severe water scarcity. The villagers urged the government to cancel the Peddavagu sand quarry immediately.
