Jagtial: While it is common for parents to spend large amounts on education in private schools, a gram panchayat in Jagtial district has decided to offer prize money to students who leave private institutions and join the local government school. In this regard, a resolution was passed by the Konaraopet gram panchayat in Metpalli mandal.

In an effort to enhance enrolment in the local government school, the gram panchayat council has come up with an innovative initiative of offering prize money to attract students studying in private schools. The gram panchayat has decided to provide Rs 2,000 as prize money to each student who joins the local government school after leaving a private institution.

Last year, the school had 98 students, including 45 in the primary section and 53 in the high school section. To increase enrolment, the gram panchayat has decided to attract more students. Around 40 to 50 students from the village are studying in private schools in Korutla and Metpalli, while some are staying in hostels in Nizamabad.

Besides conducting a door-to-door campaign in the village, parents and students pursuing education in private institutions are being informed about the facilities available at the local government school.

Speaking to Telangana Today, village sarpanch Maru Ganga Reddy said that, in order to improve enrolment in the local school, the gram panchayat had decided to provide Rs 2,000 as prize money to students who join the school after leaving private institutions. The prize money would be handed over to the newly enrolled students on August 15, he said.

Questioning the need to opt for private schools, Ganga Reddy said that all facilities, including textbooks, uniforms and meals, were being provided to students in government schools.
