Karimnagar: BRS general secretary T Jeevan Reddy demanded that the State government take steps to protect tanks and ponds from illegal encroachments in Jagtial urban and rural mandals. In this regard, Jeevan Reddy submitted a representation to RDO Madhusudhan during the Prajavani programme on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, the BRS leader said it was the responsibility of the government to remove illegal encroachments and strengthen water bodies. He urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to protect tanks and ponds from encroachment. Both Mothe and Mupparapu tanks have been completely encroached upon as they are located on the outskirts of Jagtial.

The groundwater table has declined as tanks have been filled with soil. While farmers are facing difficulties due to the lack of irrigation water, fishermen are losing their livelihood. Though the issue of encroachment of Mupparapu Cheruvu was brought to the notice of the Collector, revenue and irrigation officials on several occasions, there was no response from the authorities, he said.

Besides removing encroachments, the buffer zones and Full Tank Level (FTL) of Thimmapur, Raghuramulakota and Thippannapeta tanks should also be determined, he added.
