JNTU Hyderabad students clash during Teej celebrations, eight detained

Tension prevailed at JNTU Hyderabad after students from Manjeera and Gautami hostels allegedly clashed during Teej celebrations. Police detained eight students and are searching for three others. Several students were injured in a second clash early Friday, police said.

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at the JNTU Hyderabad campus in Kukatpally after two groups of students from the Manjeera and Gautami hostels allegedly clashed during Teej celebrations late Thursday night.

Following the clashes, police have detained eight students in connection with the incident, while three others are reportedly absconding.

According to the police, the dispute initially arose after a female student reportedly complained to a male friend about an objectionable remark. What began as a confrontation between two individuals soon escalated into a group clash involving students from the two hostels.

Kukatpally DCP Ritiraj said the police received a Dial-112 call and reached the campus, bringing the situation under control. However, the groups reportedly clashed again around 2.30 am on Friday, during which few students suffered injuries. The injured students were taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment. Their condition is said to be stable.

The clash reportedly took place near the university gate, with students allegedly using sticks during the confrontation.

The KPHB police have registered a case and are investigating into the incident. Officers are also examining the role of the college authorities and hostel management and recorded statements of the principal and warden.

The police said one of the students was found to have consumed alcohol. Investigation continues to ascertain whether he had consumed alcohol outside the campus or inside the hostel.

The eight detained students are being questioned and efforts continue to trace the three students who are absconding. Police said strict action would be taken against those found responsible for the violence.
