Hyderabad: Students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-Hyderabad) are being forced to share their hostel facilities with rats, dogs and cats, with videos showing the animals roaming freely in rooms and corridors.
On Friday, a video circulated by girl students showed a rat moving inside a cupboard in a PG Women’s Hostel room. This has raised concerns over hygiene and maintenance at the university hostels.
Two more videos from the first-year Girls’ Hostel showed dogs and cats freely moving through the corridors. In one video, a stray dog was seen entering the hostel corridor in search of food near an overflowing dustbin. In another, a cat was seen sitting near the same dustbin, raising questions over the upkeep of the university’s hostels.
Hostel inmates had on Thursday already raised complaints with the college administration about dirty and unhygienic water being dispensed from water filters that had become defunct. They also complained about poor maintenance of washrooms and bathrooms, with non-functional toilets and commodes and inadequate running water.
