Hyderabad: ‘Golden Girl’ of Indian archery Jyothi Surekha Vennam has done it again! Rishabh Yadav and Jyothi held their nerve in a thrilling final to edge out a fighting Chinese Taipei’s duo of Huang I-Jou and Chen Chieh-Lun 153-151 in the final.

Significantly, this is the same category which will be introduced in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics for the first time.

And, the 28-year-old Surekha, who is Deputy Collector in Government of Andhra Pradesh, has effectively served a clear message to the
contenders that she could mean business.

For the record, World Cup 2025 Stage 1 is the first major international competition since the announcement of inclusion of compound bow archery in the Olympics was made earlier this week.

The Indian duo, seeded fifth, was actually training mostly, 38-37 after the first set, 77-75 at the halfway mark and 115-114 heading into the final end.

However, Rishabh and Surekha raised the bar when it mattered most, producing two perfect 10s, an X and a nine in their closing four arrows.

Apparently, the Chinese Taipei pair wilted under pressure, managing 9, 9, 8 and an X to fall just short.

The Indian archers began their campaign with a 156-149 win over 12th-seeded Spain, then surprised fourth seeds Denmark 156-154 before
edging out Slovenia 159-155 scoreline in the semi-finals.

Rishabh Yadav, along with Abhishek Verma and Ojas Deotale won the bronze medal in the men’s compound team event earlier in the competition.

The Indian men’s recurve team will clash with the People’s Republic of China in the gold medal match on Sunday.

The Archery World Cup comprises four stages held in different countries. The top eight individual archers in each category across these stages qualify for the Archery World Cup Final, where they compete for the overall title.
