Karimnagar: Collector RV Karnan said that Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was a guide for women education and strove hard for female literacy by opening separate schools for women.

Collector participated in Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s 196th birthday celebrations organized by BC Welfare department in Hyderabad road of Karimnagar town on Monday. On the occasion, the collector along with Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana paid tribute to Phule by garlanding the latter’s statue. Speaking on the occasion, Karnan said a social philosopher, agitator and social reformer, Phule strove hard for women education and welfare of the society. Now, girls were able to continue their education without any hurdles because of Phule who started schools for women about 200 years ago.

Parents were still showing partiality between girls and boys by joining sons in corporate schools and daughters in government schools. Advising the people to get inspiration from Phule’s thoughts that social and economic growth of the society was possible only with education and equality, he wanted everybody to work for women education.

First ever in the country, the Telangana government has established 200 Jyotirao Phule Residential Schools and Overseas Residential Schools across the state to provide education to girls on part with boys. Appealing to the people to work for women education, he said that it was the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that child marriages should not be taken place. Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana opined that every day, people should follow the principles of Jyotirao Phule, who worked for education, enlightenment and empowerment of women besides fighting against social inequalities.

Additional Collector Garima Agarwal appealed to the people to take forward the aspirations of Phule, who waged relentless struggle for girl child education and social and economic growth of weaker sections. BC Welfare Officer Rajamanohar, Corporators Marri Bhavana, Ilender Yadav, Guggila Jayasree, and Madhavi, BC welfare association state general secretary K Sridhar Raju, working president Bollam Lingamurthi and others participated in celebrations.
