Hyderabad: Kangana Ranaut is hailed for giving powerful performances and making a name for herself despite coming from a small town. But in recent years, she has been in the news more for her controversial statements.
Time and again, the outspoken Bollywood actress has been engaging in Twitter spats, making shocking allegations and statements, raising her voice, sharing her opinion on things and topics she believes she should speak on.
From her recent statement on India’s hard-won freedom from British colonial rule, comparing Mumbai with Pakistan and from issues with filmmaker Karan Johar and superstar Hrithik Roshan, Ranaut is no stranger to controversy.
Here are her biggest controversies:
‘The freedom we got in 1947 was a ‘bheek’
She sparked a fresh controversy at the Times Now Summit 2021 when the Queen actress said that ‘the freedom we got in 1947 was a ‘bheek’, the citizens of India got real freedom in 2014.’ A vocal supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she was referring to his victory in the 2014 general elections. Critics said her comments insulted India’s freedom fighters.
‘Relationship’ with Hrithik Roshan
In 2013, Ranaut claimed that Hrithik and she were in a relationship when they were shooting Krrish. However, he categorically denied it. The duo gave multiple interviews to prove their side of the story.
Calling protesting farmers “terrorists”
At the time when farmers were protesting over the three farm laws passed by the Union government, Barbadian singer Rihanna had questioned the lack of media coverage of the issue. Responding to her tweet, Ranaut said that the protestors were not farmers, but “terrorists who are trying to divide” the country.
Comparing Mumbai to Pakistan
In 2020, the actress had said that she feared the Mumbai police more than the movie mafia and compared Mumbai to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This led to a political maelstrom involving chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. Amidst this controversy, a municipal crew paid a surprise visit to Kangana’s production house and issued her a notice for illegal construction. They even carried out a demolition drive. However, later on the Bombay High Court ordered a stay on BMC’s move.
‘Sushant Singh Rajput was killed’
After Sushant’s demise, Ranaut had claimed that the actor was murdered as he knew ‘some dirty secrets’.
Accusing Karan Johar of nepotism
It all began in 2010 when she first appeared on filmmaker Karan Johar’s television chat show Koffee with Karan. There she said that Karan is the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’. It had sparked a huge debate. Since then her feud with Karan has continued.
