Karimnagar: The Karimnagar police arrested former Maoist Aanem Chandra Rao for influencing youngsters to join CPI (Maoist) after befriending them through social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

Chander Rao, who is running a Marxist-Leninist Study Center (MLSC) on Facebook used to influence youth towards Maoist, police said.

The case of Chander Rao came to light with the arrest of Malyala Suresh of Kondayapalli on January 10. Based on the information given by Suresh, police had arrested Polisetti Ravi, Kolumula Nagabhushanam, Bandi Ramesh and Eerla Viplav Kumar and produced them in the court.

Police arrested Chander Rao while he was trying to approach the High Court in Hyderabad for an anticipatory bail on Friday afternoon. Disclosing details about the modus operandi of the former Maoist, Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana said that Chander Rao a native of Mangalavarampeta, Barahampura town, Ganjam district of Odisha, joined Ganjam CPI ML party in 1979. When Goru Madhava Rao merged CPI ML party with the then People’s War party in 1982, Chander Rao worked in Srikakulam district committee for two years. As the People’s War party completely stalled activities in Odisha, he left the party and joined the Odisha State People’s War CPI ML party and worked as state co-ordinator. After marrying one Shanthi Kumari, he resigned from the party in 1989. However, the party rejected his resignation and instructed him to work from home.

In 1997, he fled to Pulbani district of Odisha as the party had decided to eliminate him and started paper plates manufacturing business. Later, he worked with one Savyasachi Panda, who started the Odisha Maoist Party in 2012 by leaving the Maoist party. In 2014, a case was registered against Chander Rao for giving shelter to Savyasachi Panda, who was escaping from the Odisha government. In 2016, police arrested Chander Rao and produced him before the court. After being released from jail on bail, he started Marxist- Leninist Study Center to attract youths towards Maoist party.
