Karnataka: Minor earthquake of 2.3 magnitude recorded in Kalaburagi district
A mild earthquake of 2.3 magnitude hit Kalaburagi district in Karnataka on Thursday morning. The tremor was felt around Jawalga village but caused no damage. Officials inspected the site, and the public was advised not to panic
Bengaluru: An earthquake of 2.3 magnitude was recorded in Kalaburagi district on Thursday, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.
According to a press release from KSNDMC, as per the Seismic Intensity Map, the tremor might be felt up to a radial distance of 20-25 km from the epicentre, which was located 0.5 km southeast of Jawalga Village in Aloor, Aland taluk.
“This type of earthquake would not create any harm to the local community as the intensity observed is low, though there might be local vibrations felt,” stated the release.
The epicentre falls in Seismic Zone III, and the region is void of any structural discontinuities as per the Tectonic map, it added.
Talking to X, Karnataka’s Minister for IT/BT and District In-charge Minister of Kalaburagi, Priyank Kharge, said the earthquake occurred at 8.17 am on Thursday.
“In the wake of this incident, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre is in constant contact, and officials from the Department of Mines and Geology, the Tehsildar, and police officers have visited the site and conducted an inspection,” he wrote.
Noting that the earthquake was a minor one, Kharge urged the public and the villagers of Chinchansur and surrounding areas not to be alarmed in any way.
