KAVACH 4.0 commissioned on 108-km stretch in Hyderabad Division

KAVACH 4.0 has been commissioned for the first time on South Central Railway over 108 route km between Malkajgiri and Kamareddi. The upgrade improves train-location accuracy, signal information, station communication and integration with electronic interlocking systems.

Hyderabad: Indian Railways has commissioned the upgraded KAVACH 4.0 Automatic Train Protection system for the first time on South Central Railway (SCR), covering 108 route kilometres between Malkajgiri and Kamareddy in Hyderabad Division.

According to railway officials, the upgrade from KAVACH 3.2 to Version 4.0 brings improved train-location accuracy, enhanced signal information in larger yards, station-to-station communication through optical fibre cable and direct integration with existing electronic interlocking systems.

KAVACH is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system designed to help loco pilots maintain prescribed speed limits and automatically apply brakes when required.

It is also intended to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speed in critical situations and reduce collision risks.

The latest version incorporates improvements based on experience from deploying KAVACH 3.2 across 1,465 route kilometres on SCR and is planned for wider deployment across Indian Railways.
