Hyderabad: BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha has written to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, urging him to pressurise the Centre to approve 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in education, employment, and local bodies.

The move comes a day after she sent a similar letter to newly appointed BJP Telangana president N Ramchander Rao, asking him to take up the issue as a priority.

Speaking to the media on Thursday after releasing posters for Telangana Jagruthi’s proposed rail roko on July 17, Kavitha said the agitation had garnered cross-party support, including from BRS.

“I’m a BRS MLC. I would not take up this protest without the party’s approval,” she clarified when asked if BRS officially supported the agitation.

Kavitha questioned Kharge’s Telangana visit, saying it was incomplete without addressing the long-pending BC reservation issue.

She criticised the Congress party, claiming that neither Kharge nor Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, or Priyanka Gandhi had ever raised the issue of BC rights in Parliament.

She also demanded the immediate release of the caste census data collected at the gram panchayat level by the State government, instead of conducting local body elections based on outdated data.

Taking aim at the Banakacherla irrigation project, Kavitha alleged that it was being pursued to serve vested interests, and pointed out that Congress MLA J Anirudh Reddy had himself raised objections to the project.

Kavitha said Telangana Jagruthi, in collaboration with the United Phule Front, will intensify its agitation in the coming days.
