Hyderabad: Adding another feather to its cap, Telangana will be home to Asia’s largest fruit market at Koheda in Rangareddy district. Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will lay the foundation soon for the fruit market which is being built as per international standards.
Being developed in about 178 acres, the Koheda fruit market will be bigger than the fruit market in Delhi and will exclusively serve the marketing needs of horticulture crops.
Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy, who laid foundation stone for the 100 feet road development works to be taken up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh at Koheda fruit market on Friday, interacted with horticulture farmers and traders. Accompanied by Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy, he also visited the temporary fruit market established at Batasingaram.
Speaking on the occasion, Niranjan Reddy said the Koheda fruit market is expected to gain huge demand due to its accessibility to the Shamshabad international airport, Outer Ring Road and the upcoming Regional Ring Road. A layout is being developed for the Koheda market with international standards and facilities. The Telangana State Warehousing Corporation will establish a cold storage unit, with an aim to store potato crop seeds to facilitate potato cultivation in about 50,000 acres in the State.
“The agriculture and allied sectors have progressed rapidly under the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. Though the agricultural crops are cultivated in a larger extent of acre, the horticultural crops too are gaining importance and earning good returns due to changing eating habits.
An increasing number of people are now opting for millets, fruits and vegetables as well as reducing rice consumption,” he said. He added that the government was developing food processing units and storage units accordingly.
MLAs D Sudheer Reddy, Manchireddy Kishan Reddy and Bethi Subhash Reddy, Agriculture Commissioner M Raghunandan Rao, Marketing Director Lakshmi Bai and other officials were present.
