Thiruvananthapuram: Police in Kerala registered cases against 2,799 people for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol during a week-long special drive across the state, a police spokesman said on Monday.

The police also recommended the cancellation of the driving licences of 884 people, the spokesman said.

The special drive, named ‘Drive Sober-Stay Alive’, was conducted from August 29 to September 4 under the leadership of the Traffic and Road Safety Management wing of the Kerala Police.

As many as 81,565 vehicles were inspected during the drive to identify drunk drivers and create awareness about the dangers of road accidents, the spokesman said.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a major cause of road accidents and deaths and poses a serious risk to all road users, he said.

Highway patrolling units have been directed to continue inspections in the coming days and take strict action against repeat offenders, the spokesman said.

The drive was conducted under the supervision of Traffic Zonal Superintendents of Police, with the active participation of district traffic nodal officers and traffic enforcement units.

The police also urged the public to report traffic violations through the ‘Shubhayathra’ road safety initiative’s WhatsApp number, 974700 1099.

People can send photographs, audio or videos of violations, along with details such as the district, place, date, time and vehicle number, the spokesman said.
