Hyderabad: The pandemic has had far-reaching effects on the food service industry and more so on small restaurants & local food businesses, with many struggling to continue operations. KFC India in association with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) is providing expertise and entrepreneurial support to these businesses to sail through the challenging times. Samir Menon, MD, KFC India shares with Y V Phani Raj the success achieved so far and near-term plans. Excerpts-
India Sahyog programme
As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, the smaller food businesses and restaurants could use the support to cope with the ‘new normal’ and upgrade their operations with heightened safety and hygiene measures, enhancing customer experience. We launched the KFC’s India Sahyog programme to help 500 small food joints and restaurants by 2022 revive their business. In the first phase, the programme will be executed with select restaurants across Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Participating restaurants will have access to specially designed training modules on various aspects of the restaurant business. Participating food business owners would receive a certification by FSSAI, NRAI and KFC India upon completion of the modules.
Tangible outcomes
Since the launch of the programme, we have worked towards addressing key concerns faced by the restaurant industry as food safety & hygiene, profitability, enhancing food delivery operations & customer experience. Across Delhi and Bengaluru, we are conducting extensive training modules for 200 restaurants and food businesses. We are now unfolding a new chapter of this initiative in Hyderabad and looking forward to empowering restaurants in the city. Our aim is to extend these training and learning to 500 businesses across the country thereby providing an impetus to the growth of the restaurant industry in India.
Plans for Hyderabad
We have had a successful run of the programme in Delhi and Bengaluru. We are now moving onto a new chapter of KFC’s India Sahyog programme to impart expertise and entrepreneurial support to select 100 local restaurants, food joints and eateries in Hyderabad. With the support of NRAI’s vast network of restaurants, we are able to reach food businesses that require support and get in touch with participating restaurants. Restaurants can also nominate themselves through NRAI. Interested businesses need to meet a certain selection criterion and then further get selected on a first come first serve basis. We have also partnered with FSSAI to help conduct training on food safety and other modules.
Grassroot measures
We would continue to evaluate the situation and should the need persist, we would consider extending the scope of the programme into more cities and restaurants. We will evaluate relevant areas of impact that will help elevate the situation of small food joints and local restaurants across India.
