Khammam canal tragedy: Ninth-class student drowns, friend missing

A tragic incident occurred in Khammam city when two ninth-class students were swept away while swimming in the NSP canal at Ramanagutta in Raghunadhapalem mandal. One student’s body was recovered, while search operations are ongoing to trace the other.

Khammam: A ninth-class student drowned while his friend of the same class went missing in the NSP canal in Khammam city on Wednesday.

According to police, the students Abdul Sohail and Shashank Sagar went swimming in the canal at Ramanagutta area of the 53rd municipal division in Raghunadhapalem mandal in the afternoon hours.

One of their friends, Eshwar, who accompanied them informed the locals on noticing them being washed away in the canal waters. Upon receiving information, the police, SDRF team, revenue officials along with locals, launched a search operation.

Two-Town Inspector of Police Balakrishna, the BRS city president Pagadala Nagaraju and the local corporator Srividya monitored the search operations. The body of Sohail was retrieved while Sagar was still missing and search operations were continuing to trace the student.

The students aged 14 years were studying at NSP Colony Government High School in the city and belonged to Sultan Nagar in the colony, where a pall of gloom descended following the incident.
