Hyderabad: The neuro surgery team at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Hospitals, Secunderabad have employed Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) technique to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease on a 32-year-old patient.
Abhinay Kumar of Hyderabad had typical symptoms of Parkinson’s including tremors, stiffness and difficulty in walking. The DBS technique was conducted successfully by Head, Neuro Surgery, KIMS, Secunderabad, Dr Manas Panigrahi along with Dr Dhanunjay, neurologist, Dr Praveen Kumar Yada and other nursing staff, according to a press release.
The procedure, which involves sending electric impulse from electrodes to parts of the brain, was taken up on March 3. “The patient’s condition required a surgical intervention to rectify the anomaly in the brain and had to be done with precision. While performing DBS, accuracy is very important. The senior team of neuro surgeons and neurologists were also aided by an extremely accurate robotic tool,” Dr Manas Panigrahi said.
Post completion of the procedure, the symptoms like tremors and other symptoms have reduced for the patient.
