Hyderabad: Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy on Friday requested Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to release the pending balance of State’s share pertaining to up-gradation of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RGIMS) in Adilabad.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, he said ‘Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana’ (PMSSY) was launched with the objective of correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services and augment facilities for quality medical education in the country.
The two components of PMSSY envisage setting up of institutions like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AlIMS) and for up-gradation of the Government Medical College (GMC) or institutions.
The up-gradation of GMCs was aimed at adding 150 to 250 beds, new operation theaters, eight to 10 super specialty departments, and around 15 new PG seats. Under phase – III of the scheme, two institutes – RGIMS and Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal were identified, where each of these institutes was earmarked funding of Rs.120 crore from the Central government.
This was done keeping in mind the fast developing urban centers of Adilabad and Warangal and the need for enhanced access to quality healthcare. The delays in completion of up-gradation works in these institutes in Adilabad and Warangal were due to the delay in receipt of the State’s share of project fund and delayed construction activities during Covid-19 waves.
Inspite of these challenges, the Kakatiya Medical College construction was completed in October, 2020 and the RGIMS in 2021 by HITES.
