Kothagudem: Julurpad police in the district invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against a ganja smuggler involved in several cases.
Acting on the directions of SP B Rohith Raju and Kothagudem DSP Shaik Abdul Rahaman, Julurpad CI D Sree Lakshmi submitted documents to higher authorities for invoking the PD Act against the accused, D Sivashankar Reddy of Tallagommuru in Burgampad mandal.
Cases were registered against the accused at Burgampad, Julurpad, and Balanagar in Hyderabad for smuggling ganja. Orders were issued on October 23 by higher officials invoking the PD Act against the accused, who continued ganja smuggling even after release from jail.
Julurpad police handed over the order copy to the accused in the presence of Cherlapally jail authorities. The assets acquired by Sivashankar Reddy through ganja smuggling were also confiscated by the police in the past on court orders.
SP Rohith Raju said that due to such criminals, many youths were getting addicted to drugs and destroying their precious future. The district police have taken up a programme, ‘Chaitanyam’ – war on drugs, to curb the ganja menace by creating awareness among the youth.
Others habitually involved in such activities would be identified, and the PD Act would be invoked against them, the SP said while appreciating DSP Rahman, CI Sree Lakshmi, and the staff for getting the PD Act invoked against Sivashankar Reddy.
