Kothagudem residents seek relocation of dumping yard near cremation ground

Residents of Kothagudem’s 11th division have demanded relocation of a dumping yard near the Murredu stream, alleging that accumulated garbage poses health risks and blocks access to a cremation ground. They staged a protest seeking immediate clearance and relocation.

Kothagudem: The residents in the 11th division of Kothagudem Municipal Corporation have demanded the corporation authorities to relocate a dumping yard set up on the banks of Murredu stream in the division.

Four years ago, a dry resource collection centre (DRCC) was set up in the area to segregate wet and dry waste to handle garbage and waste collected from 15 divisions of the corporation. A shed was built to prepare vermi-compost but it is yet to become functional.

As a result the wastage dumped at the DRCC got accumulated causing health risks much to the chagrin of the residents. On the other hand, heaps of garbage spread over a road that connects a Vaikunta Dhamam built near the DRCC barring passage to the funeral ground.

The residents complained that performing funeral rites had become an ordeal as they had to pass through heaps of garbage. Recently a family had to perform the last rites of a deceased person on the road as they could not reach the Vaikunta Dhamam as garbage on the road blocked the way.

It is causing deep distress to those wishing to perform these last rites in a traditional manner. Relatives and local residents suffer greatly due to the foul odour emanating from the DRCC, whenever they attend the last rites at Vaikunta Dhamam, complained a resident Vijayalakshmi.

A few days ago, the residents of Patha Kothagudem, Indiramma Colony, Marwadi Camp, the Hospital Area and Gautam Nagar led by the local corporator Padala Akanksha staged a protest demanding the authorities to clear the piles of garbage and ensure proper access to the cremation ground as well as to relocate the dumping yard to some other place.

Speaking to Telangana Today, a CPI leader Padala Bhavani informed that the matter was taken to the notice of the MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao. Following which officials assured to shift the dumping yard to a nearby location; if the officials failed to act the protests would continue, he warned.
