Hyderabad: Handlooms Minister KT Rama Rao urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and reduce GST on handlooms and Textiles and save weavers.
In a tweet, the Handlooms Minister said “Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, on the National Handloom Day you had talked of strengthening #Vocal for handmade.
On the contrary to the idea, your government has enhanced GST on handlooms and Textiles from 5 percent to 12 percent, which will be a death knell for the industry. Request you to intervene and save the weavers,”
Last Sunday, Rama Rao had also wrote to Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal to withdraw the decision to increase the GST on handlooms and textiles from 5 to 12 percent, effective from January 1, 2022.
He had said that in the past two years, textiles and particularly the handlooms sector, was going through a tough phase following the covid pandemic.
At this juncture, revising the GST from 5 percent to 12 percent would affect the industry adversely, he had said in the letter.
