Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao lashed out at the Congress government for installing the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in the place earmarked for the statue of “Telangana Talli” opposite Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat. He charged the Congress of disrespecting Telangana’s identity and history, calling it a direct insult to the people and their struggle for statehood.
The statue of Telangana Talli, symbolising the aspirations of four crore people, was originally planned to be placed near the Telangana Martyrs Memorial “Amarajyothi” and the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat. However, Rama Rao said the Congress which is known for selfish politics, decided to install Rajiv Gandhi’s statue in such a significant location. “By placing Rahul Gandhi’s father’s statue there, the Congress has insulted Telangana’s self-respect,” he stated.
The BRS working president termed the Congress’ decision as an attempt to undermine the existence of Telangana and snuff out the spirit of Telangana movement from the people. “How dare you insult Telangana Talli? Is this how you honour Telangana’s legacy by putting up a statue of ‘Rahul Gandhi’s father’ where the heart of the Telangana people, “Telangana Talli”, should have stood?” he asked.
He warned that the people of Telangana, who fought for years for statehood, would not forgive this insult. He reiterated that Telangana’s identity and the sacrifices made during the statehood movement should not be overshadowed for political gain.
