Hyderabad: BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on Tuesday accused the Revanth Reddy government of conspiring to attack BRS president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao by sending Congress leaders with police escort towards his Erravelli residence. He demanded that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy apologise for the alleged attempt to attack the BRS chief.

Speaking to the media at Bowenpally police station, where he was detained by police while proceeding towards Erravelli, Rama Rao accused the Congress government of using the police to facilitate the movement of Congress leaders towards Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence while preventing BRS leaders from reaching there. He questioned why Congress leaders and MLAs were seeking the Opposition leader’s death despite him leading a 14-year movement for Telangana and serving as Chief Minister for a decade.

The BRS working president termed the alleged treatment of former Ministers and party women legislators P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy by police during the Assembly confrontation as highly reprehensible. He said the women leaders were surrounded, dragged, held by the throat and had their sarees pulled. He demanded an apology from Revanth Reddy and the Congress government for the alleged rude behaviour of the police.

Rama Rao said the government was trying to suppress the Opposition by suspending or expelling BRS legislators and filing cases against two MLCs under the SC/ST Act. He said the real issue was the Congress manifesto and its unfulfilled promises, including financial assistance to women, farmers, farm labourers, tenant farmers and auto drivers; two lakh jobs; unemployment allowance; and scooters for youth.

However, he said the Congress government was using the Speaker to divert attention from its failures. He condemned the arrest of the BRS MLCs despite MLC Thatha Madhu’s clarification that he had not intended to make any remarks against the Speaker and had expressed regret. He suggested that the Chief Minister and the Congress government hold the Assembly session for an entire day to hurl choicest abuses at BRS chief K. Chandrashekhar Rao and party leaders, but thereafter confine themselves to discussing people’s issues in the Assembly.

The former Minister also raised pending fee reimbursement dues, employees’ DA and PRC, and water-related issues. He demanded that the government announce a water release schedule for Nagarjuna Sagar ayacut farmers and operate the Kannepalli pumps to supply Godavari River water to farmers. He also sought a discussion on prohibited-list lands and fee reimbursement arrears.

Accusing Revanth Reddy of adopting a dictatorial approach and using the police to suppress the Opposition, he said the BRS had faith in the Constitution, law and judiciary. He warned that the party would not leave the government unchecked during the remaining 823 days of its tenure and would continue to fight on public issues.
