Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao has extended support to journalist Rekha Mudiraj, expressing concern over her being questioned for several hours at a police station while accompanied by her six-month-old child.
The BRS alleged that police registered a case against Rekha and summoned her for questioning for broadcasting a press conference organised by the opposition party on her YouTube channel. She was allegedly questioned for around eight hours and was not allowed to breastfeed her child during the questioning, the party claimed.
Rama Rao, who has been following the developments since Wednesday night, spoke to the journalist over the phone on Thursday and enquired about the previous day’s events. He assured her that the BRS would stand by her and asked her not to lose courage. He also said he would meet her personally after recovering from his illness.
At Rama Rao’s direction, BRS leaders and women leaders met Rekha and her family members at her residence. They assured the family of legal assistance and support from the party.
The BRS criticised the government for the prolonged questioning of a woman journalist with an infant for merely reporting or broadcasting an opposition press conference. The party said the incident raised concerns over media freedom and stressed that journalists should be able to discharge their professional duties without undue pressure.
