Suryapet: KT Rama Rao, BRS working president, on Thursday said the Congress government was shielding police officials in the alleged custodial death of Dalit youth Karla Rajesh in Kodad of Suryapet district. He demanded that officials responsible for the incident be dismissed immediately and vowed to confront the government in the Assembly in this regard.

The BRS working president visited Rajesh’s family at their residence in Kodad on Thursday and consoled them. He demanded that Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy and local Congress leaders immediately clarify their stand on the incident. Calling it a clear case of lockup death, Rama Rao stated that the youngster was tortured and unjustly murdered in police custody under political pressure. He questioned the promotion of DSP Sridhar Reddy after the incident and asked how the government could reward an officer who was facing such serious allegations.

Comparing it with the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi regime, the former Minister recalled the Addagudur police station case involving the death of a Dalit woman, Mariamma, when the then government provided Rs 35 lakh as ex gratia, offered a job to a family member and dismissed the responsible officials. However, the Congress government was protecting those involved instead of ensuring accountability and justice. He announced Rs 5 lakh financial assistance from the BRS to Rajesh’s family and assured them of continued legal and political support.

Former Minister Jagadish Reddy and other BRS leaders accompanied him during the visit.
