Hyderabad: A two-judge panel of the Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice A Rajashekara Reddy on Friday came down heavily on the State government on compensation for farmers in land acquisition matters. “There are hundreds of cases where not a single penny has been paid”, the Chief Justice observed. He commented, “They are not beggars, they are the land owners.” Finance Secretary Ramakrishna Rao was present in the court to explain why compensation was not paid.
The panel was dealing with a contempt case filed by Bakkuri Linganna and others of Jagitial and Nizamabad districts complaining about the inaction of the government in compensating them. Special Government Pleader Harendranath Reddy informed the court that efforts were being made to deposit money. “You are not doing any charity in depositing the amounts,” Justice A Rajashekara Reddy, speaking for the panel, remarked. “You have no right to acquire land without compensating them,” he added. The panel adjourned the case by four weeks for compliance and dispensed the presence of the officer.
