Hyderabad: A new food trend called ‘lazy momos’ is gaining popularity across Instagram and other social media platforms, offering a shortcut to making momos at home without the usual effort of kneading dough or mastering folding techniques.

Unlike traditional momos, which require a wrapper made from rolled dough, lazy momos use a simple layering technique. Creators prepare their preferred filling, usually vegetables, paneer, or minced chicken, cook and shape it into firm balls. The balls are then coated in flour, dipped in water, and coated again several times until a thin outer layer forms. Once steamed, the result resembles a momo without the need for rolling or pleating.

The trend has caught on because it appears quick, beginner-friendly, and less intimidating than making momos from scratch. Many home cooks say it saves time while still delivering a juicy filling and soft exterior.

Food creators across Instagram and YouTube Shorts have been sharing their own versions of the recipe, with some experimenting with different fillings and dipping sauces. Several videos demonstrating the technique have attracted thousands, and in some cases millions, of views.

The comment sections reveal a mix of reactions. Supporters describe the hack as “genius” and “perfect for lazy cooks,” while others joke that it is more of a dumpling than a momo. Some traditional momo lovers argue that skipping the wrapper-making process takes away an important part of the dish.
